I just wanted to point out that your #1 has become even more critical, as there have been some developments: the city has signed off on the metrofi network without even providing the full testing report to the public, or provided an opportunity for public comment or peer review. Even worse is there appear to be highly questionable methodologies and practices in the testing review. The city has foolishly given up any possible leverage to have MetroFi fix problems their network. I'm not sure what prompted them to jump to sign-off on a network plagued with usablility complaints - it's a bit confusing (and dissapointing).

--
CalebAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9015184.post-63217919871254490412007-04-12T13:21:00.000-07:002007-04-12T13:21:00.000-07:00Here's a new one for you. If nothing else, increased communication seems to be a driving force behind the drastic moral changes we have been undergoing since the industrial revolution. Those moral changes are the only thing that can possibly give us sustainability in a world with nuclear weapons (and other such toys). The fight for resources is going to get far, far worse before it gets better. We need as much of humanity as possible to have modern, progressive values, and I think an uncensored, portable wireless internet connection will do that a lot better than free trade. On one level, it's pretty harmless, but if you're trying to do something, and the only potential collaborators are rockstar wannabes, that's a problem.

I've seen people refer to the "writer role playing game" as another example of this. Some people are more concerned with getting to say, "Yes, I am a writer" than actually doing the writing and then trying to sell it. This keeps vanity presses in business.

As for Rails: I just threw that out as an example because it's what I'm working with right now, and because I think most Rails devs eventually reach a point where they ask "why does Rails do things that way?" and hear "because DHH says so". Their focused approach has been a huge asset, but I could do without the attitude. I think it'll be a huge weakness in the long run if the focus on limiting the core code also curtails development of a diverse set of extensions and plugins.Audreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18047854082783468242noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9015184.post-12475835864376691562007-03-14T10:10:00.000-07:002007-03-14T10:10:00.000-07:00You forgot one low-tech user group, which meets on...You forgot one low-tech user group, which meets on the first Thursday of every month between October and April. I'm talking about the Timbers Army, the supporters group for the Portland Timbers soccer team.

No, it's not a tech group, or even one with any large goals other than getting drunk and going to games. But if you scratch the surface, you see all kinds of smaller goals (generally of an artistic bent, like making flags and banners to display at games, or guerrilla marketing to get people to come to games). You also get the negative aspects of user groups that you talk about: cliques, rancid communication scenarios, and high-flying egos intent on squeezing the joy and love out of everything based solely on their need to be loudest and most visible donkey in the pen.

Er, this maybe should be a comment to one of your later posts...

ps, you stole my blog template!Lucashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11055329772454038875noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9015184.post-7884017798935659582007-03-14T00:24:00.000-07:002007-03-14T00:24:00.000-07:00Also, I was wondering if you'd be interested in ex...Also, I was wondering if you'd be interested in expanding on this:

> If working with Rails is really awesome at first, and then sucks after six months when you learn what's under the covers, that matters, right?Matthewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06430819650373389099noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9015184.post-77866771333558958272007-03-13T22:38:00.000-07:002007-03-13T22:38:00.000-07:00You're right. I think that with any activity that takes a special skill, there will always be those people who see it as an end, rather than a means. Generally, they're in it for self-centered rewards (recognition by peers, primarily) rather than creating things that will benefit others. Newbies to the community see the rockstars as the model, so they strive toward rockstardom. Because the rockstar crowd attracts people, the marketers jump on board. You get the idea. You wrote the post.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that this is just one of those things we have to live with. We can lessen the effect by not buying into the marketing and trying to promote our own point of view. But as long as there are people who are externally-motivated (which there always will be), this situation will exist.

I guess I take some comfort in knowing that the tech community could be a *lot* worse off than it is. So I am probably quite capable of enthusing about how cleverly everything is worked out, and even how I might prefer said situation, even if the story itself is bleak and dystopian.
